[Letter] 1857 June 6, Botetouret Springs to [John Albert Broadus] / C.L. Cooke. 1857.

Asks Broadus for advice in the wake of a typhoid epidemic: "Last fall there were about 115 pupils here and these with the families, servants, and workmen made our aggregate of about 200 persons on the Saturday one of the pupils came down with typhoid fever and about 8 others had it during the fall. Four or five of the workmen also had it. Three of the pupils died, but none of the workmen. On the 4th of Feb. the school was called together after a dispersion of 2 months. All remained healthful till the 1st of May when the fever again mainifested itself. 8 persons took it while here and several had it after leaving. Three of the pupils died, of those who had it here, but more who left have died." The school was in financial difficulties, having lost about $12,000 in gross income. The trustees would meet on the 15th, "at which time you must certainly be present." The Hollins Institute was a school for young women at Botetouret Springs, Va.
